One and a half percent of world electricity

Data centres used about 1.5% of global electricity; the IEA expects demand to more than double by 2030.

The global share looks small, but load is concentrated in a few regions and therefore runs into local grids, connection queues and available generation. The IEA also stresses a wide forecast range: demand depends on AI adoption as well as model and hardware efficiency.
